climb, squeeze, slide…

Rock hopping, squeezing though rock tunnels, climbing waterfalls, sliding down rock chutes, and plunging into pools, river scrambling is all about working together as a team to navigate this adventurous terrain.

Apart from being a lot of fun, students will learn to assess challenges, make safe choices, and help each other to ensure everyone is supported through each challenge.

Our river scrambling adventures are run in the real outdoors of the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks, and the level of difficulty of the scramble is adapted to the age and level of experience of students on adventure.



Experienced, full-time, outdoor teachers and tutors

Each group of 12 students is led by a fully qualified and experienced outdoor tutor.

Scrambling in becks and gorges is an excellent way to engage with the environment and experience parts of the curriculum first-hand. Whether its understanding how the gorge or ghyll was formed, how weather has affected this, or what now lives in this environment.

Key Stage 2

Geography: Rivers

Pupils will learn how the water cycle process works, the different types of river features, and the effects of erosion.

Science: Living Things

The group will learn to recognise that living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago.

They will learn to identify how animals and plants have adapted to suit their environment in different ways, and that adaptation may lead to evolution.

Key Stage 3

Geography: Weather

Students will learn to consider the weather and the effects it will have on the activity and the venue. They will learn about forecasting, where to find a forecast, and where our weather comes from.

Science: Geology

The group will learn to identify rock types and the effects of erosion in the forming of gorges and valleys.

Key Stage 4

Geography: Rivers

Students will be in a youthful part of the river where they can learn all about its formation, characteristics, and the erosion that is taking place today changing  the landscape.
