find your path…

During Year 10 and 11, GCSE students begin their journey of choosing their path in the world.  Our five-day Dales Pathfinder programme encourages students to assess risk, face fears, make decisions, and take action – a valuable mindset for plotting one’s path to follow dreams.

Students will navigate across a lake on a sailboat, look for the best footholds scaling gritstone cliffs, choose their lines mountain biking through woodland forest, and challenge other teams to an orienteering event.

Taking on these challenges, students will build self-confidence and self-esteem – making new friendships and creating memoires for a lifetime along the way.

Itinerary

This is an example of an activity package and not a certainty, the Outdoor Education team will build you a specific programme of activities based on conversations with you.

Students go out on activity in groups of 12 so, depending on the number of students on adventure with us – and weather conditions, the order of activities may vary.

River Scrambling

Geography: Rivers

Students will be in a youthful part of the river where they can learn all about its formation, characteristics, and the erosion that is taking place today changing the landscape.

Sailing

P.E: Individual or Team sport

Following the GCSE P.E curriculum, we can develop students skills to help them perform key sailing skills and maneuvers in increasingly demanding and progressive drills, in interesting and fun environments.

Geography

Weather hazards and extreme weather events are part of the GCSE curriculum. Students can spend time talking about the types of these hazards, and how they can affect sailing.

Mountain Biking

Geography

Bikes will be used as a mode of transport to reach more remote and mountainous environments in which students can observe the characteristics of the landscape and hypothesize how it may change over time.  Local land uses can also be observed and discussed.

Rock Climbing

P.E.

Following the GCSE P.E curriculum, we can develop students skills to help them perform key climbing skills and techniques on increasingly demanding and progressive grades of climbs, in interesting and fun environments.

Geography: Glaciation

As part of a climbing session, students can learn all about the formation of the landscapes around them and the part glaciers had to play. They can also learn all about what these landscapes now offer, their uses, and how use conflicts can be managed.

Orienteering

Geography

Taking orienteering to the next level, students will work in a more open and mountainous environment. They will learn to read contour lines and what has created and shaped the land, whilst searching for markers in a more competitive setting.

P.E.

Orienteering can be a competitive sport and students will have the opportunity to learn how to take part in a team, and as individuals, using tactics, map knowledge, and learning to pace themselves to complete the course.

Learning Outcomes

PERSONAL GROWTH

Each student will be challenged at a level to suit their ability. Our tutors will help them build the tools they need to believe in themselves – to not be afraid to try, no matter how difficult the task ahead may seem. Confidence will be built through achieving success but also in the ability to deal with failure.

SOCIAL SKILLS

Students will learn the importance of working together in order to succeed. They will need to build relationships with their team members in order to solve problems and overcome challenges together – grasping the importance of how helping and supporting one another can have an impact at home, at school, and in the future.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

Spending time in the real outdoors provides students with the opportunity to connect with nature and get a better understanding of how human activity affects our fragile landscapes and eco-systems.
