Year 7 transition residentials

Year 7 Transition Residentials

Starting high school is a big move. It’s an exciting new chapter with lots of change, and for some young people it takes time to step outside their comfort zone and make new friendships.

There’s no better environment to get your year 7 students solving problems together and building their confidence than the great outdoors.

North Yorkshire Outdoor Learning Service can help support the move to secondary school alongside your own induction programme and give your year 7 students a chance to shine.

Our residentials

Working with up to 150 students, we can offer a bespoke transition residential with activities that could include canoeing, caving, body boarding, bushcraft, raft building, river scrambling, rock climbing, sailing, and woodland orienteering. All programmes are individually tailored.

Most schools find that a two-day residential works perfectly alongside their induction programme, but longer stays are an option if you prefer. We also offer day visits.

A typical two-day residential would include:

Day 1

  • 09:30 Arrive and settle in
  • 10:30 Ice breaker and problem solving
  • 12:45 Lunch
  • 13:30 Activities
  • 18:00 Evening meal
  • 19:30 Evening activity

Day 2

  • 08:00 Breakfast
  • 09:00 Activities
  • 12:45 Lunch
  • 13:30 Activities
  • 16:00 Depart

Two incredible locations to choose from

You can choose either Bewerley Park Outdoor Education Centre in Pateley Bridge surrounded by the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre with the North York Moors National Park as a backdrop and the coast on your doorstep.

Day visits

We want young people starting high school to people to benefit from the experience of an overnight residential, but if a day visit suits your school better than we can offer that too.

Working with up to 120 students, we can offer individually tailored transition day visits. We would split students into groups of around 12 and work through a number of different activities, team building exercises and problem solving challenges throughout the day. Students would bring a packed lunch and free tea and coffee are provided for staff.

A typical day visit would include:

  • 09:30 Arrive
  • 10:30 Activities
  • 12:45 Lunch
  • 13:30 Activities
  • 16:00 Depart
