Get kitted up and venture into the North Sea. Bodyboarding is an excellent activity for students to get immersed in the coastal environment and gain confidence in the water.  The feeling of catching a well-timed wave is hard to beat!  

Our body boarding adventures run off the beaches of the North York Moors National Park.

Bodyboarding is a seasonal activity and is available from the Easter holidays to the October Half Term.

What’s Included

Students are provided with the following equipment, as and when appropriate.



All specialist equipment

Bodyboard and buoyancy aid.



All specialist clothing

Wetsuits



Transport

Once at the centre, all transport to and from adventure activities is provided.



Experienced, full-time, outdoor teachers and tutors

Each group of 12 students is led by a fully qualified and experienced outdoor tutor.

All sporting equipment and adventure specific helmets and harnesses.



All specialist clothing

Waterproofs, wellies and wetsuits, when required. Ideally students should bring their own wellies, but we have plenty on hand to lend.



There are a huge number of personal benefits bodyboarding brings to individuals and it can also target some key areas of the curriculum such as looking at forces and how they affect waves.  Spending time bodyboarding can also provide some unexpected curriculum opportunities, like developing spoken English for example – students can create arguments on how they feel waves are created.

Key Stage 2

Water Safety

Students will learn about the risks and dangers that are present in the surf environment. They will be taught to assess and manage the risk, and how to keep themselves safe.

Forces

Students will be taught about waves.  They will learn about the forces that create and maintain the swell, and then what causes it to steepen and break.

Geometry

Students can explore the geometry of the beach and surf, discovering patterns and investigating their causes and direction of movement.

Key Stage 3

Geography

Students can learn all about the natural environment they are in – they can discuss its formation and how natural processes effect it.  The weather can also be observed during the session with discussions about its impact on the activity.

Science: Waves

Students will learn about the forces that create and maintain the swell, and then what causes it to steepen and break.

Key Stage 4

Geography 

Human and Physical

Students will understand how human and physical processes interact to influence, and change landscapes, environments and the climate; and how human activity relies on effective functioning of natural systems.

Spoken English 

Students will experience using Standard English when the context and audience require it. They will work effectively in groups of different sizes and taking on required roles, including leading and managing discussions, involving others productively, reviewing and summarising, and contributing to meeting goals/deadlines.

Listening to and building on the contributions of others, asking questions to clarify and inform, and challenge courteously when necessary.
