Hill Skills

The Hill Skills training is aimed at beginners wanting to develop their personal skills so that they can operate confidently and safely in hill and moorland terrain such as that found in the North Yorks Moors or the Yorkshire Dales. This is an ideal course for those who have never completed any formal training and are assisting leading DofE groups or wanting to lead primary school groups on low level walks. Whats Covered

Planning – how to successfully plan a hill walk in the UK or Ireland.

Walking skills – what things should you consider while out walking and what can make life easier (pace, nutrition, movement skills etc.).

Clothing and equipment – being suitably dressed and equipped can make the difference between a great day out and a complete disaster.

Weather – how it affects the hills and your day out.

Navigation in the hills – everything from selecting a compass to navigation strategies and an intro to GPS.

Environmental knowledge – how to minimise your impact on the hill and information on good practice and useful organisations.

Hazards and emergency procedures in the hills – how to respond to any hazards you encounter and what to do in an emergency.

Level 2 MTB Leadership Assessment

East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre

Day 1: 13 July 2024 | 09:00am - 17:00pm One-day Practical and written assessment with a British Cycling accredited provider. The assessment is to be booked once you’ve had enough time to hone the skills and knowledge you have obtained on your training day. The maximum time to complete your award is 18months. You will be assessed on topics such as planning and delivery of rides, leading techniques for effective group management, map reading and navigation, management of accidents and emergencies, equipment set-up, trailside repairs and core mountain bike techniques.To attend the training course you must: Have completed the 2 day Level 2 Training Course.Have logged additional experience In order for your award to be accredited you are required to: hold British Cycling Membership of Ride level or above.attend and evidence a two-day outdoor First Aid courseundergo and evidence safeguarding training appropriate to the country they are leading in. These can occur after your course, but your award will only be provided on receipt and acceptance of these.

Level 2 MTB Leadership Training

Day 1: 29 June 2024 | 09:00am - 17:00pm Day 2: 30 June 2024 | 09:00am - 17:00pm The Level 2 Mountain Bike Leadership Award is the entry point for experienced mountain bikers wanting to use their experience to safely guide others on off-road terrain. The course covers topics such as planning and delivery of rides, leading techniques for effective group management, map reading and navigation, management of accidents and emergencies, equipment set-up, trailside repairs and core mountain bike techniques.To register for the course:The minimum age to attend a course is 18 years old and you must have mountain biking experience in various terrains and weather conditions. An appropriate level of physical fitness for a day’s riding is essential to be competent in the techniques and skills required to safely negotiate the typical trail features, generally comparable to red-graded purpose-built trails.
