SUITABILITY
For candidates who have completed a Climbing Wall Instructor training, are confident in the syllabus, and meet the full prerequisites. A valid 8-hour first aid certificate is required.
Climbing Wall Instructor assessment
The Climbing Wall Instructor assessment is a one-day practical evaluation of your ability to instruct climbing and bouldering safely on artificial walls. This includes technical competence, risk awareness, group management, and instructional ability.
You must meet the following prerequisites before attending:
- Attended Climbing Wall Instructor training (or have exemption)
- Confident in the full syllabus
- Logged at least 30 personal climbing sessions across 3 different walls
- Led at least 40 routes indoors (minimum grade: French 4)
- Assisted in 15 instructed sessions across at least two walls, including a large public wall
- Logged 5 personal reflections on DLOG
- Completed a minimum 8-hour (1-day) in-person first aid course with assessment

Technical competence (equipment, belaying, personal climbing ability)
Group management and risk judgement
Teaching and communication skills
Awareness of access, etiquette, and environmental ethics
Assessment Outcomes
Pass – You’ve demonstrated all required competencies
Defer – Some elements need further development before partial reassessment
Fail – A full reassessment is required

The assessment is to be booked once you’ve had enough time to hone the skills and knowledge you have obtained on your training day. The maximum time to complete your award is 18months. The course covers topics such as planning and delivery of rides, leading techniques for effective group management, map reading and navigation, management of accidents and emergencies, equipment set-up, trailside repairs and core mountain bike techniques.To register for the course:The minimum age to attend a course is 18 years old and you must have mountain biking experience in various terrains and weather conditions. An appropriate level of physical fitness for a day’s riding is essential to be competent in the techniques and skills required to safely negotiate the typical trail features, generally comparable to red-graded purpose-built trails.
