SUITABILITY
Ideal for aspiring walk leaders who have completed at least 10 varied lowland walks involving map use, or who have completed the Hill Skills course. Candidates must be registered on the Lowland Leader scheme with Mountain Training.
Lowland Leader training
The Lowland Leader Training course is the first step for those who want to lead groups in lowland countryside and woodland, in summer conditions. Over two days, you’ll begin developing the essential skills and sound judgment required to confidently and responsibly lead others on lowland walks.
Through a combination of classroom sessions and practical, on-the-ground learning, you’ll gain valuable insights into group management, navigation, safety, and environmental responsibility. This course sets a strong foundation for your journey toward qualification as a Lowland Leader.
Following training, candidates are expected to consolidate their experience and continue developing their skills by logging walks in the Mountain Training Digital Logbook (DLOG) before progressing to assessment.
What’s Covered
Leadership Skills & Group Management: Techniques for safely and effectively managing groups in lowland terrain.
Walking Skills: Developing efficient movement techniques and understanding group pace and needs.
Basic Navigation: Map reading, route planning, and practical navigation in lowland environments.
Planning Walks: How to design suitable, enjoyable, and safe walking routes.
Equipment: Selecting and using appropriate clothing and kit for both leaders and participants.
Hazards & Emergency Procedures: Identifying risks and learning how to handle incidents and emergencies in the outdoors.
Environmental Responsibility: Understanding access rights, conservation practices, and the impact of land use and ownership.
Course Outcomes
You’ll leave with the knowledge and skills needed to confidently progress toward your Lowland Leader Assessment , following a period of consolidation.
Upon completing the training, you’ll be eligible to join the Mountain Training Association (MTA)—gaining access to continuing professional development (CPD), resources, and a network of like-minded leaders.

Day 1: 13 July 2024 | 09:00am - 17:00pm One-day Practical and written assessment with a British Cycling accredited provider. The assessment is to be booked once you’ve had enough time to hone the skills and knowledge you have obtained on your training day. The maximum time to complete your award is 18months. The course covers topics such as planning and delivery of rides, leading techniques for effective group management, map reading and navigation, management of accidents and emergencies, equipment set-up, trailside repairs and core mountain bike techniques.To register for the course:The minimum age to attend a course is 18 years old and you must have mountain biking experience in various terrains and weather conditions. An appropriate level of physical fitness for a day’s riding is essential to be competent in the techniques and skills required to safely negotiate the typical trail features, generally comparable to red-graded purpose-built trails.
