SUITABILITY
Designed for individuals who have completed Lowland Leader Training, are confident in the full syllabus, have logged a minimum of 20 walks in lowland countryside in different types of terrain, hold a current 16-hour first aid certificate and are registered with Mountain Training on the Lowland Leader scheme
Lowland Leader assessment
The Lowland Leader Assessment is the final stage in qualifying to lead groups in lowland countryside and woodland, under summer conditions. With much of the UK and Ireland consisting of this terrain, this qualification opens a wide range of opportunities for safe, responsible leadership.
Over two days, you’ll be assessed on your technical ability, decision-making, and leadership in real-world scenarios. The assessment ensures you have the competence, judgement, and knowledge needed to lead others confidently in lowland environments.

The majority of the UK and Ireland is made up of this type of terrain so you'll never be short of places to go walking. Before you book onto a Lowland Leader training course, make sure you have done the following: You must be at least 17 years old You must be registered on the scheme You must have recorded a minimum of 10 varied walks in Lowland terrain where the use of a map is required (ideally these will be recorded on DLOG) which can have taken place at any point (pre- or post-registration). Day 1: 13 July 2024 | 09:00am - 17:00pm One-day Practical and written assessment with a British Cycling accredited provider. The assessment is to be booked once you’ve had enough time to hone the skills and knowledge you have obtained on your training day. The maximum time to complete your award is 18months. You will be assessed on topics such as planning and delivery of rides, leading techniques for effective group management, map reading and navigation, management of accidents and emergencies, equipment set-up, trailside repairs and core mountain bike techniques.To attend the training course you must: Have completed the 2 day Level 2 Training Course.Have logged additional experience In order for your award to be accredited you are required to: hold British Cycling Membership of Ride level or above.attend and evidence a two-day outdoor First Aid courseundergo and evidence safeguarding training appropriate to the country they are leading in. These can occur after your course, but your award will only be provided on receipt and acceptance of these. The course covers topics such as planning and delivery of rides, leading techniques for effective group management, map reading and navigation, management of accidents and emergencies, equipment set-up, trailside repairs and core mountain bike techniques.To register for the course:The minimum age to attend a course is 18 years old and you must have mountain biking experience in various terrains and weather conditions. An appropriate level of physical fitness for a day’s riding is essential to be competent in the techniques and skills required to safely negotiate the typical trail features, generally comparable to red-graded purpose-built trails.
